Open Question: Can you stop your own heart?



I was attempting to slow my heart rate down through a breathing and meditation exercise, i had thought that a good way to exercise the heart other then speeding it up was to try to slow it down. Well during the exercise, i felt my heart rate slow to an uncomfortable point where it actually began to hurt in which i stopped the exercise. I believe my heartbrate was around 40bpm and my heartbeats were so light i could barely feel them! Is this just a simple mind over body scenario and could it actually be helpful to my health or could a low heart rate like that lead to more serious consequences?
